Business Briefs - Understanding Interchange

Heartland periodically publishes helpful brochures and informational articles of interest to merchants. Here are Business Briefs about Interchange and similar topics related to the impact of Interchange on merchants.

What Is Interchange?
Interchange is the fee associated with the exchange of transaction data between Acquiring and Issuing institutions in accordance with the Visa and MasterCard (Card Associations) bylaws and rules. Interchange rates are typically adjusted by the Card Associations twice each year and may result in both increases and decreases to various rate categories.

At Heartland, our objective is to share all of the information with our merchants regarding Interchange adjustments. Heartland Payment Systems' full-disclosure commitment ensures our merchants that their processing rates are never increased more than the rates mandated by the Card Associations and that we also pass through the full benefit of any Interchange decreases.
